Shortlist Perplexity when your recurring job starts with discovering sources and checking a cited answer. Shortlist ChatGPT when research is one part of a longer task that ends in a document or presentation. These are workflow starting points, not exclusive capabilities: both products offer research and creation tools.
This comparison uses official product documentation and an original review exercise. It does not rank the apps by tested accuracy or speed. The practical question is which route leaves you with fewer unsupported claims and less work before the meeting.
What to take away.
Both products can research; Perplexity also documents presentation creation, so compare actual modes and access.
Judge whether each source supports the precise claim, not how many citation markers appear.
Keep evidence and uncertainty intact when a research answer becomes slides.
Choose the next deliverable, not a search-versus-chat label
If you need a defensible answer to a narrow question, begin with search and source inspection. If you need to combine a research answer with an internal memo and produce a decision deck, include the file-building and revision steps in your comparison.
The table below is an editorial shortlist based on the documented routes in the next section. It is not a scorecard from timed tests. Existing access can be a good reason to try one product first; a second subscription needs a recurring benefit.
| Your task | Where to begin | What decides whether it works |
|---|---|---|
| Find evidence for a specific current claim | Perplexity search or ChatGPT web search | Primary-source coverage, dates and relevant passages |
| Turn research and local files into a deliverable | ChatGPT Work; compare Perplexity creation tools if available | The returned file and its fidelity to the sources |
| Prepare a presentation repeatedly | Compare either app with a dedicated deck workflow | Source traceability, revisions and the final editable handoff |
Both products extend beyond their original reputation
Perplexity describes source-linked answers in its Pro Search documentation. Its plan comparison also lists file and app creation, including presentations, with access and limits tied to the subscription.
OpenAI documents web search and deeper research workflows, as well as creating and revising presentations. Check the app interface, enabled tools and workspace permissions for the route you intend to use.
A shared model name does not make the surrounding apps equivalent. Search tools, available files, connected services and the presentation handoff still differ. Native-product features should not be inferred from API access in another app.
Use a research question with a checkable answer
Try this exercise in the native products: “Using current official documentation, compare the presentation export options of Claude, Gemini Canvas and Perplexity. For each, give the product interface, supported handoff, access conditions, source URL and the date you checked it. If the documentation does not establish a detail, mark it unknown. Separate file creation from an outline.”
Run the question with the same scope and on the same day. Record the plan, research mode and enabled tools. Do not compare an ordinary chat response in one app with a longer research mode in the other and attribute the difference solely to the brand.
Open the cited documents yourself. A page about an API, enterprise product or mobile app may not support a claim about a different interface. An undated marketing statement may be weaker evidence for current access than a specific help page.
Build a claim ledger before building slides
Keep one row for each material claim: exact claim, source URL, relevant passage, product interface, date checked and remaining uncertainty. This is your review record, not a feature this article assumes either app will fill perfectly.
For example, an official page documenting export from one app to Google Slides supports that handoff. It does not by itself establish native PPTX export in every plan or faithful reproduction of a corporate template. Keep those as separate questions.
| Check | Acceptable evidence | Reason to revise |
|---|---|---|
| Source match | The cited passage states the relevant capability | The link covers a different app or plan |
| Time | The claim has a checked date and current supporting text | A launch announcement is treated as a permanent entitlement |
| Scope | Restrictions remain attached to the claim | A conditional feature becomes “available to everyone” |
| Uncertainty | Missing information stays unresolved | The assistant fills a gap with a confident guess |
Carry the verified answer into a decision deck
Ask for three slides: the team’s required handoff, the documented options, and the unresolved checks before choosing. Require source URLs for the capability claims. Review whether the shorter deck drops an access condition that was present in the research answer.
Then make one correction: identify a claim with the wrong product interface and ask for it to be narrowed. Inspect both the comparison table and the recommendation. An edited paragraph is insufficient if the final slide still recommends a feature the team cannot use.
Use the Perplexity presentation guide for that route. For a dedicated deck workflow, bring the checked source material and brief into Syaxis, then review the generated presentation and PowerPoint export. Syaxis does not include a native Perplexity subscription.
Choose on verified work you can reuse
Keep the product that makes your recurring source checks and final deliverable easier. If Perplexity gives you a useful source trail, that matters more than a broad claim that one assistant is “smarter.” If ChatGPT fits the files and output you already use, include that saved handoff work in your decision.
Track unsupported claims, sources you had to replace, manual corrections and whether the final file was usable. You can compare those observations after the exercise. This article reports no measured winner because it has not run that native-app comparison.
FAQ
Is Perplexity more accurate than ChatGPT?
This documentation-based comparison cannot establish an accuracy winner. Check both on the same question and primary sources. A citation is useful for verification, but it does not guarantee that the surrounding claim follows from it.
Can both Perplexity and ChatGPT create presentations?
Both vendors document presentation workflows. Check the specific creation tool, account access and output format rather than assuming every chat mode returns the same kind of deck.
Should I pay for both?
Only if repeated work shows a benefit that one account does not cover. Compare your source checks, revisions and file handoff before adding a second subscription.
Bring it into your work.
Use a narrow question, verify the source-to-claim match, then test the presentation handoff. The source verification guide and research presentation method cover the next steps.
How we prepare our guides
Syaxis uses AI to assist with drafting and translation. Comparisons draw on linked sources; they are not hands-on tests unless a test method is described. Worked examples are illustrative unless identified otherwise.
