Start with the job, then choose the AI tool. Writing an email, finding a source, changing a product image and delivering a presentation require different controls. A model leaderboard cannot tell you whether an app has the editor, source access or export your work needs.
This guide gives you a shortlist by task and a repeatable way to compare it. It is a documentation-based selection guide, not a tested performance ranking. Syaxis publishes it and is one of the options.
What to take away.
Choose the app for the deliverable, then compare its available models.
Try a correction and the final download before paying for a larger allowance.
Compare the same source material and record serious factual errors before judging style.
Which AI tools should you try for each task?
| Tools | What to compare |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini | Drafting and revising text. Compare how you edit a passage and preserve approved facts. |
| Perplexity, Elicit, Gemini Notebook | Researching a question or reading a fixed source packet. Choose between finding evidence and working within supplied material. |
| Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT Images | Creating or revising images. Compare reference-image handling, composition changes and the downloaded asset. |
| Canva, Gamma | Design work and browser presentations. Check the other visual formats you need and the exported deck. |
| Syaxis | Turning research questions and source files into complete presentations with built-in research, writing and design. Revise the saved deck through chat; preparatory Chat work is optional. |
Writing: keep the facts while changing the draft
Start with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini Canvas. Compare the editing surface as well as the first answer. A long document benefits from being able to review a selected passage without losing the rest.
Give each tool an approved customer update with a delivery date and one exception. Request a shorter version, then change only the date. Reject any version that drops the exception or adds a discount you did not authorize. For more detailed writing tasks, see the AI writing tools guide.
Research: find sources or answer from your own material
Use Perplexity or an assistant’s research tools to investigate an open question. Elicit supports research tasks, while Gemini Notebook supports work with collected sources. Match the entry point to the question instead of treating every chat answer as research.
Ask for the claim, original source and relevant limitation together. Open the source and check the passage before reusing it. A link to a related article does not establish the specific claim. Compare research tools when source discovery is the main job.
Images: compare the edit you actually need
Adobe Firefly offers image tools; ChatGPT Images supports creation and revision in chat. Try your own product photo and ask only for a simpler background. Inspect the product’s shape, label and color after the edit.
Choose a tool that can produce the required asset dimensions and permitted use. A beautiful first preview is insufficient if the product changes during revision. The image tools comparison covers the image-specific choice.
Presentations: compare the editor and the delivered file
Canva is a candidate when a project includes several visual formats. Gamma creates browser presentations with PDF, PPTX and PNG export. Open an exported sample in the recipient’s software before choosing by the preview.
In Syaxis, provide your research question or source files directly to the presentation agent. It researches, writes and designs a complete deck, then supports revisions beside the saved presentation and PowerPoint, PDF or PNG export. Investigating sources in Chat first is optional. See the research-to-deck demonstration or compare presentation makers for a slide-focused shortlist.
Free AI tools: check a complete task before subscribing
ChatGPT Free includes search, with limited file uploads and data analysis. Gemini distinguishes access without a Google AI plan from paid allowances. Neither free entry point grants every integration or unlimited use of every model.
Adobe Firefly offers daily free generations; paid access is needed beyond that allowance. Canva separates its Free plan from a Pro trial. Check the AI feature and assets used in the design before assuming the whole project can be completed free.
Claude and Perplexity offer free access with limits. Free access, a timed trial and initial credits are different arrangements. Check whether the particular file, research or image feature is included and whether its allowance renews.
Include revision and download in your trial. Gamma and Syaxis add a brand mark to free exports. Syaxis presentation creation uses credits; unlimited presentation count is not unlimited free generation. Check Syaxis plans for the available allowance. A larger paid quota does not prove that a tool handles your difficult source or layout correctly.
Try one task, one correction and the delivered result
Shortlist tools from the relevant category above. Give each the same non-confidential source and request, then allow the same number of revisions. Record the interface, selected model and available tools so a search-enabled product is not mistaken for a test of the model alone.
Before generating answers, write down disqualifying errors. For a client update these might be an invented commitment or the wrong delivery date; for research, a citation that does not support the claim; for slides, a chart whose label contradicts the underlying data. This prevents impressive phrasing from hiding an unusable result.
Illustrative outputs, not measured model results: answer A preserves the source’s “proposed pilot” status but uses awkward prose; answer B reads smoothly but says the pilot succeeded. For this task, B fails the factual requirement regardless of style. Set that rule before revealing model names.
Open the final file or answer and record the corrections still needed. Prefer the tool that meets the requirement with acceptable review effort and cost. Repeat with another recurring task before subscribing; this is a practical selection exercise, not a universal model ranking.
| Criterion | Observable check · Decision rule |
|---|---|
| Source fidelity | Preserves the proposed status and one-team scope · Required to pass |
| Revision | Corrects the claim everywhere it appears · Inspect the delivered answer |
| Style | Clear enough for the intended reader · Judge only after factual requirements pass |
FAQ
Can one AI subscription replace all the others?
Only if it covers your required applications, tools and output formats. Access to a provider’s model through another app does not include its native subscription or integrations. Poe is a chat app; OpenRouter is an API service; Syaxis combines Chat with presentation creation. Compare the purchase you actually need.
How many prompts make a fair benchmark?
A few prompts can guide your personal choice but cannot support a broad performance claim. Use varied recurring tasks and repeat observations before generalizing beyond your own workflow.

How we prepare our guides
Syaxis uses AI to assist with drafting and translation. Comparisons draw on linked sources; they are not hands-on tests unless a test method is described. Worked examples are illustrative unless identified otherwise.
