DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Apps, APIs and Workflow Costs

Compare the DeepSeek and ChatGPT apps first, then their separate API options. Understand file workflows, token costs and when a shared AI workspace makes sense.

In this article

DeepSeek has a native assistant as well as a developer API. ChatGPT is also a native product, separate from OpenAI’s API. Comparing a DeepSeek token price with a ChatGPT monthly subscription skips the choice most readers need to make: which app helps them finish their work?

For questions and drafting, compare the two chat experiences. For research, files or coding, compare DeepSeek Harness with the relevant ChatGPT tools, not just their chat boxes. Both offer ways to do work beyond a text reply. The product documentation was checked on 25 October 2026; the comparison below is not a quality benchmark.

Key Takeaways

What to take away.

  1. Compare the DeepSeek app with the ChatGPT app before considering API prices.

  2. DeepSeek Harness and ChatGPT Work both go beyond chat; compare their tools and actual output.

  3. For APIs, calculate cached input, uncached input and output separately, then add tools and engineering costs.

Chat, file creation and coding need different tools

DeepSeek Harness is a separate desktop product in public preview. Its documentation includes slide and document creation, data analysis, research, repository work and background tasks. The ordinary assistant and the API are separate ways to use DeepSeek.

ChatGPT’s usage guide separates Chat for discussion and drafting, Work for delegated tasks and finished files, and Codex for software development. Choose the environment that can read your source material and deliver the result you need, then compare its output on your own task.

When the file workflow is the deciding feature

Suppose you need an explanation of a policy paragraph. A good text answer may finish the job. Suppose you need a six-slide client briefing with editable content and an export file. Now you also need source extraction, layout, file creation and revision. Model reasoning alone does not supply that entire workflow.

ChatGPT’s presentation guide documents creating or revising PowerPoint and Google Slides from source material and reference decks. Its desktop, connected-Slides and PowerPoint add-in routes are distinct, and availability depends on the account and workspace.

DeepSeek API vs OpenAI API is a separate comparison

For an application you are building, compare DeepSeek’s API model and pricing reference with the OpenAI API pricing reference. Use the selected model’s rates and capabilities. The DeepSeek reference distinguishes cached input, uncached input and output; features such as image understanding are model-dependent.

A fair integration comparison holds the task constant: the same input documents, required output structure, retrieval tool and acceptance criteria. Record the tokens actually billed, retries, tool fees and time spent fixing the result. Compare a completed usable task, not the cheapest single token rate.

Your application still needs its own interface, file handling, credential protection and tool execution. A model supporting tool calls does not mean the provider automatically runs your application’s search or exports a presentation. Likewise, an app subscription does not give your code an unlimited API allowance.

A cost worksheet you can actually use

Use this formula for metered model cost: uncached input tokens × uncached input rate + cached input tokens × cached input rate + output tokens × output rate. Divide token counts by the unit used on the pricing page, commonly one million. Apply the provider’s actual billing categories instead of assuming all repeated text is cached.

Illustrative monthly workload: 100 tasks, each with 20,000 uncached input tokens and 2,000 output tokens. Before retries, that is 2 million input tokens and 0.2 million output tokens. The model bill is therefore 2 × the per-million input rate + 0.2 × the per-million output rate. This is arithmetic for a fictional workload, not a provider quote or measured usage.

Add retrieval, storage and engineering to estimate the workflow cost. For a ready-made app, compare the subscription and allowances against how many usable tasks you complete. The cheaper choice can change when one route requires substantial manual formatting or maintenance.

Worked example: preserve evidence in a supplier comparison

Imagine two supplier PDFs: one quotes annual pricing, the other monthly pricing; only one includes onboarding. Ask for a comparison table with the price period, included services and a source passage for each entry. This is an illustrative review task, not a claim about either product’s observed output.

A useful answer keeps the original billing periods visible and labels any calculated annual equivalent. It does not declare the monthly supplier cheaper by comparing unlike numbers. Next, ask for a one-page recommendation that separates confirmed costs from unanswered questions.

For an app evaluation, compare the readable table and revision process. For an API evaluation, also count extraction work, repeated context and retries. If the final output must be a presentation, include the cost and effort of making the deck instead of treating the comparison table as the finished assignment.

Where Syaxis is a different purchase

Syaxis combines presentation creation with independent Chat for writing, research, document questions and image generation or editing. A brief or source material can start a deck; research is part of the build, chat directs revisions, and exports include PowerPoint, PDF and PNG. These capabilities use a shared Syaxis plan with credit and per-deck slide limits.

Paid plans allow selection among the Chat models actually offered in Syaxis. This article does not claim that DeepSeek is included, and a Syaxis plan is not a native ChatGPT subscription. Choose Syaxis for its combined workflow, not as a way to obtain every provider’s native app.

If you only need conversational help, begin with the assistant that already meets that need. If you need a documented file workflow, compare the native apps on that requirement. If you are developing software, evaluate APIs separately. Keeping those decisions separate prevents a low token price from becoming a misleading buying recommendation.

FAQ

DeepSeek’s official download page advertises its assistant as free to try. That does not make its API usage free or establish unlimited access to every product capability. Check the specific app and API separately.

No universal comparison follows from an API token rate and an app subscription. Compare the same kind of purchase and include the work needed to reach a usable result.

DeepSeek Harness documents slide creation. That does not establish that every output is an editable PowerPoint file. Request the required format and inspect the exported text, charts and layout before deciding whether it replaces your current tool.

This guide does not claim that it is. Use the current Syaxis Chat model picker to see available models. Syaxis supplies its own tools, workflow and plan allowances rather than bundling native provider subscriptions.

Bring it into your work.

For an end-user shortlist, see ChatGPT alternatives. For integration planning, read about context windows and multi-model apps versus API platforms. Compare the complete recurring task before choosing a subscription or building around an API.

How we prepare our guides

Syaxis uses AI to assist with drafting and translation. Comparisons draw on linked sources; they are not hands-on tests unless a test method is described. Worked examples are illustrative unless identified otherwise.
